President’s Letter
Our September General Meeting was a special time of connection for all of our “Circles” as we shared and celebrated the many varied programs, events, and projects, which involve our members throughout the year. After becoming even more aware of many of the valuable endeavors, which AUMW Circles strive to include in their yearly activities, I went to the dictionary to find the definition of a “circle”. I found “a closed plane curve of which all points are at an equal distance from the center” as the first entry after the word “circle”. Now the members of our UMW circles could certainly join hands and form the “circle” which fits this description, but immediately the world “closed” would have to go! I have been an active member of UMW in two different churches for the past 50 years and have never experienced anything but openness and warm hospitality displayed within UMW groups. As I read further down in the dictionary, I found the perfect description of our “circles”- “a number of persons bound by a common tie”. We actually could name many common ties within all UMW Circles, traditional and special interest. At the top would be educating ourselves about the concerns of the global community and acting on those concerns, as we try to follow the teachings of Jesus through work in mission in our local community and all around the world.
Let all of us strive to keep those circle connections strong and always caring.
- Deanna Kehlenbach, AUMW President
Action Alert. There is a new UMW Action Alert on the bulletin board: Suppression of Voting Rights a Threat to Democracy, Election 2012. It points out many states have passed laws to impose voter ID or proof-of-citizenship requirements. These laws make it harder for people to participate in the democratic process and primarily affects the poor, minorities, students, young people and the elderly. Read the rest of this alert today and be sure you are properly registered and vote.
Circle Collections, October Meetings; World Thank Offering, November 1
Ladies, do you think about how fortunate we all are to live where and when we do? If so, are you putting money (coins and bills) aside for the World Thank Offering? Help us sow in “good soil” the worldwide mission field of UMW. World Thank Offerings should be donated at your October circle meeting. They will be celebrated at the general meeting on November 1 so be sure to bring them. Circle leaders handed out World Thank Devotion Calendars for the month of October.
