Description: They have been described as the most famous couple in the New Testament. These first century missionaries were expelled from Rome by the emperor; that misfortune led them to a life-changing connection with the Apostle Paul in Corinth. Come learn about these tentmakers who lived, worked and traveled with Paul. We will also discuss what we can learn from Priscilla and Aquila's model of mutuality in ministry and how the early church fathers apparently tried to diminish Priscilla's leadership legacy!

Description: “Is not this the fast that I choose. . .to share your bread with the hungry?” Isaiah 58:6-8 Join us to help create a circle of protection around programs vital for hungry people here in the U.S. and around the world. During these sessions, we’ll learn about Bread for the World’s effort to advocate withour leaders to continue to invest in lifesaving nutrition and development programs. We’ll then write letters as part of Bread for the World’s 2012 Offering of Letters to Congress. There will be computers available and sample letters to facilitate writing letters to your Congressional representatives; handwritten letters are always effective as well. Let’s aim for sending 100 letters from AUMC this year!

Fewer than 50% of Americans have plans to ensure that they can make their own choices at one of the most vulnerable times of their lives - at the end of life, at any age. How do you know where to begin? What gets in the way of making sure you stay in charge? In this presentation, we'll talk about how to cut through the fear and confusion and make a plan that clearly communicates what you want. Appropriate for any age 18 or older.

The Book of Job

Description: What comes to mind when you think about the Book of Job? Satan? Suffering? It relates the story of Job, who, through the hands of Satan with God’s permission to test Job’s righteousness, suffers the loss of all of his possessions and suffers in health. His wife wants him to curse God, but he refuses, saying, “…shall we receive good from God and shall not receive evil?" God, in turn, restores Job’s health, and gives him twice as many possessions. The book of Job has been included in lists of the greatest books in world literature. The overriding question asked in the book is, “Why do the righteous suffer?” Dr. Erickson will provide some new insights and opportunity for discussion on this ever popular book of the Bible.
Renewal of Spirit through the Sacred Text of Torah

Location: See TV MonitorDescription: Come and see a Holocaust Torah; hear the story of the incredible journey it took to get to North Carolina in 2009, when Heart Space Spiritual Resources was honored to receive this Torah. It is one of the numerous Torah scrolls stored in the Pinkas Synagogue in Prague during World War II. Learn about its history as one of the more than 1500 Memorial Czech Scroll Trust Torahs salvaged from the Nazi and Communist occupation from 1939 until 1964, at which point they were moved to London. Learn why it could not be returned to the synagogue in Czechoslovakia where it resided 200 years ago. Reverend Grove will also focus on the Torah as Sacred Text – look inside to see and learn more about how Torah is written and used in worship and study.

We’ve heard of Advent, Epiphany, Lent, Pentecost and other seasons, but what do they mean? We’ll take a look at the seasons of the church year – their meaning, their colors, their symbols. Then on Sunday, Nov. 25, the last Sunday of the church year, during the worship services we will let the seasons guide us as we move through the year changing the symbols, hymns, and prayers accordingly.

Desert Dwellings and the Monks Who Made Them

Description: Join us to learn why monasticism evolved and see images of the isolated desert locations.We will see a cliff-side hermitage where one monk lived in isolation for 68 years, learn the basic differences in types of monastic settlements, and take a look at St. Catherine's Monastery which has remained intact and in almost continual use for 1400 years. We will see an extraordinary video clip of a modern Greek Orthodox monastery where monastic life and daily routine has remained unchanged for over 1000 years! As we examine these religious retreats, we will learn why religious devotees went to the desert and what their daily lives were like.
