Description: An in-depth Bible study that explores historical perspective, metaphor and symbolic meanings. We pay special attention to the evolution of human understanding of God that can be discovered through history. We utilize multiple translations as we seek to understand the scriptures in their ancient context and the spiritual gifts they offer for living each day. We seek to grow our faith through intentional and practical application of each week’s lessons.

Description: “Is not this the fast that I choose. . .to share your bread with the hungry?” Isaiah 58:6-8 Join us to help create a circle of protection around programs vital for hungry people here in the U.S. and around the world. During these sessions, we’ll learn about Bread for the World’s effort to advocate with our leaders to continue to invest in lifesaving nutrition and development programs. We’ll then write letters as part of Bread for the World’s 2012 Offering of Letters to Congress. There will be computers available and sample letters to facilitate writing letters to your Congressional representatives; handwritten letters are always effective as well. Let’s aim for sending 100 letters from AUMC this year!

The Nasty Mudslinging Election of 1800

Description: Thomas Jefferson (AKA Reverend Jack R. Van Ens) recounts the feisty 1800 Presidential Election which he barely won. Seminar participants will learn why blistering accusations along extremely partisan political lines tore apart the nation. Would incumbent President John Adams and his wealthy friends rob citizens of their liberty? Did Adams’ Federalist Party intend to concentrate political power among the top 1%? Or, would Jefferson’sDemocratic-Republican Party create havoc by letting the remaining 99 % of U.S. citizensoccupy corridors of political power? Would Jefferson also relegate religion to the sidelines in American life?Bring questions and comments to this lively discussion, some dynamics of which are being re-played in the 2012 presidential election.
